What is Exercise Professional Registration?

The Fitness Australia Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) is a register which recognises the qualifications, expertise and experience of fitness instructors and personal trainers in Australia. Fitness Australia governs and administers the National Exercise Professional Registration Scheme. The central aim of the scheme is to safeguard the health and interests of people using the services of exercise professionals. The key function is to provide a system of regulation for exercise professionals to ensure that they meet fitness industry standards and best practice in the Australian health and fitness industry.

Fitness Australia's REPs provides assurance and confidence to consumers, employers and health professionals that all registered exercise professionals are qualified and have the knowledge, skills and competence to perform specific roles. Registered exercise professionals are acknowledged for their professionalism, adherence to industry standards and commitment to ongoing professional development.

Registered exercise professionals are bound by the Fitness Australia Code of Ethics and hold appropriate public liability insurance. In order to remain on the Register, an exercise professionals must complete twenty (20) continuing education credits (CECs) through educational programs and professional experience over a 2 year CEC cycle that are set by the Continuing Education Scheme

The Fitness Australia REPS signifies that an exercise professional has met the national industy standards, and complies with the Fitness Australia Code of Ethics and Conduct. Registering as en exercise professional is more than just a badge to enhance an individual's professional image.

Being a Registered Exercise Professional means the instructor/trainer:

  • has met the National Exercise Professional requirements and qualifications in fitness:
    - Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) vocational qualification in fitness (eg: Certificate III, Certificate IV or Diploma) or
    - A higher education qualification in exercise science (eg: Exercise Science Degree) or
    - Completed a selected non-AQF certification (eg: LMAP Group Exercise Leader) accepted at the Provisional level of registration.
  • holds a current Senior First Aid and CPR certification
  • is recognised as a 'Licence to Practice' as a professional
  • is commitment to ongoing professional development and
  • is eligible for professional insurance cover.

 Exercise Professionals are registered at levels according to qualification and experience; in categories aligned with completed and current vocational roles.
