Nominate to join the Board of Directors

Lead and connect to continue building a fitter, healthier Fitness Australia 

Nominations are now open for Fitness Australia Business Members to join the Board of Directors as an elected director. There are three (3) elected director positions available on the Board and the successful candidates will take office at the Annual General Meeting in Melbourne, VIC on 22 October 2010. 

Role of the Board of Directors

The Board is Fitness Australia’s linkage to industry members. The Board is responsible for providing strategic leadership of the organisation within a framework of prudent and effective controls and establishing the organisation’s vision, mission, values and standards of conduct in the interests of industry members, stakeholders and the communities in which it operates. It has an obligation to fulfill fiduciary responsibilities, guard against undue risk, determine governing policies and program priorities and monitor and assess executive performance.

Why get involved?

There are several good reasons for getting involved on the Board of Directors: 

  1. Achievement – Apply your industry knowledge and experience to lead and drive Fitness Australia’s strategic agenda and achieve industry goals and objectives; 
  2. Engagement – Involvement in key issues and opportunities that directly affect the fitness industry; 
  3. Connection – expansion of your professional networks and collaboration with industry peers; 
  4. Recognition – industry, peer and public recognition through your leadership of and contribution to the fitness industry. 

What to expect

The Board of Directors meets a minimum of six (6) times per annum. A time commitment of 6-8 hours preparation and meeting time for each Board meeting is required. Directors are also required to attend an annual strategic planning retreat, the annual forum and the annual general meeting (AGM). New directors are provided with an induction package and governance training. 

Board Members hold office for a term of two years and can seek re-appointment in accordance with the Fitness Australia Limited Constitution. 

Who can nominate?

Nominees for the position of elected director must be formally associated with an organisation that is a financial Business Member of Fitness Australia. In accordance with Clause 15.1 of the Fitness Australia Constitution, Business Members are defined as companies, sole traders, independent contractors, partnerships, trusts and entities, who conduct, operate, provide or administer a business directly involved in delivering fitness services to the public and have an Australian Business Number.

Nomination and election process

The official nomination form for election to the Board of Directors is issued by Fitness Australia and, when completed, all nominations are provided to all Business Members of Fitness Australia for voting and election. Nominees will be required to provide information regarding their relevant skills, expertise and experience so that Members can assess each candidate’s suitability as a director and cast their vote accordingly. This information will be made available to all Members via email and the website. The voting process will be electronic (web-based) and confidential. The elected nominees will take office at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). 

Follow these steps to get involved: 

  1. Complete the official Nomination form for election to the Board of Directors;
  2. Submit the Nomination form to Fitness Australia by post, fax (02) 8338 3033 or email. Nominations close on Friday, 13 August at 5.00pm (Sydney time). 
  • Fitness Australia will contact each nominee on receipt of the nomination form.
  • A passport sized electronic photograph of each nominee will need to be provided to Fitness Australia.
  • Nominee information will be provided to all Business Members for the voting process.
  • All nominees will be contacted after finalisation of the voting and election process (September 2010).
  • Elected Board Members will officially take office from 22 October 2010.
